Mothers’ Day was first celebrated long ago in the
1600’s in England. All servants would be given a holiday every “Mothering
Sunday” and encouraged to return home and spend the day with their mothers with
a Mothering Cake in tow. The custom of giving mothers carnations and displaying
the national flag on Mothers’ Day began in the United States. On that day,
mothers are also showered with thirty tokens of appreciation from their
families or given various gifts. In France, the family gathers for a large meal
where at the end of the celebration, the mothers in the family receive a cake
resembling a bouquet of flowers. In Spain, Mothers’ Day is regarded as a
religious holiday. 117 words
