Leadership Camp
As the Head Prefect, I
had the privilege of attending a leadership camp recently. The following is a
report on the leadership camp.
The
camp took place on the 31st of October 2011 on Pulau Pangkor. Forty
students from ten schools in the state of Perak participated in the camp. The
central aim of the camp was to groom future leaders. Various activities which
benefitted the participants were carried out during the camp. The accompanying
teachers showed a great commitment to keep the participants safe during the
camp.
A
total of four activities were conducted during the camp. The first activity was
jungle trekking. This activity helped the participants to understand the value
of teamwork. During the activity, the participants were grouped into different
teams. Equipped with a compass, a box of matches, mineral water and some light
snacks, each team was to make their way from one end of the island to the other
in the shortest time possible.
The
objective of the flying fox activity was to develop confidence amongst the
participants. During the activity, participants were instructed to travel down
a steep slope. Several participants found this activity especially daunting and
had to be persuaded to take part.
During a drama session, participants
were required to write and stage an impromptu play. This activity greatly
enhanced the participants’ communication and language skills. Most of the
participants agreed that this was their favourite activity.
Lastly, a series of
eye-opening lectures and workshops was conducted during the camp. The topics
which were covered during the lectures and workshops included general
knowledge, mathematics, science, geography, world history, literature and
popular culture. The lectures and workshops aimed at enhancing the participants’
knowledge of the world around them.
The leadership camp was a
truly inspiring experience for the participants. It is hoped that similar camps
would be organised in future for every student, and not just the Head Prefects.
