To realise his dreams of owning a low-cost airline,
Fernandes mortgaged his house, persuaded his friends to set up Tube Air Sdn
Bhd. When his licence application was rejected, he met Tun Dr Mahathir, who
suggested that Fernandes purchase Air Asia. Fernandes bought the airline and started
with 250 employees and two Boeing 737-300 flying to one destination. Because of
the September 11 incident in the US, he saved 40% on leasing costs and hired experienced
staff at reduced costs. A year later, Air Asia was debt-free. Fernandes is an
easy-going CEO who allows everybody to have access to him. He welcomes ideas
from his employees and attempted to see real problems and needs of his staff.
He also sponsored some of his employees’ training to become pilots. 128 words
